What Is a vCISO?
A vCISO (virtual Chief Information Security Officer) is an experienced security executive who provides CISO responsibilities on a part-time or fractional basis, usually remotely and on a monthly retainer. You may also see it called a fractional CISO, outsourced CISO, or CISO-as-a-service.
A vCISO sets security strategy, manages cyber risk, leads compliance efforts, oversees policies and incident readiness, and reports to leadership — the same responsibilities as a full-time CISO, scaled to the size of your organization.
Signs You Need a vCISO
- Customers are sending security questionnaires you can’t confidently answer.
- You need to meet CMMC, NIST SP 800-171, ISO 27001, SOC 2, or HIPAA requirements and no one owns the effort.
- Your IT provider handles tools, but nobody sets security priorities or budget.
- Leadership, the board, or investors are asking “how secure are we?” and the answer is unclear.
- A cyber insurance application or renewal is asking about controls you’re not sure you have.
- You had an incident or near-miss and need a program, not another tool.
- You’re too small for a full-time security executive but too exposed to go without one.
What Your vCISO Does
Security Strategy & Roadmap
A 12-month security roadmap tied to your business goals, risks, and compliance obligations — prioritized so your budget goes to what matters most.
Risk Management
A maintained risk register, periodic risk assessments, and clear risk decisions documented for leadership. Cybersecurity Risk Assessments →
Compliance Leadership
Ownership of your compliance program — CMMC and NIST SP 800-171, ISO 27001, SOC 2 readiness, HIPAA — including policies, evidence, and audit preparation. CMMC Compliance → · ISO 27001 Consulting →
Policies & Governance
A complete, current policy set that reflects how your organization actually operates, reviewed and updated on a defined schedule.
Customer & Vendor Security
Answers to customer security questionnaires and due-diligence requests, plus review of your own critical vendors.
Incident Readiness
An incident response plan your team has actually practiced, with tabletop exercises and clear escalation paths. Our leadership’s incident-handling background (GCIH, GCIA) shapes plans that work under pressure.
Leadership & Board Reporting
Plain-language reporting on security posture, risk, and progress — the answer to “how secure are we?” in a format executives can act on.
IT & MSP Oversight
We work alongside your internal IT team or managed service provider: setting priorities, reviewing their security controls, and translating compliance requirements into technical tasks.
How the Engagement Works
- Consultation (30 minutes, free). Your business, obligations, current security state, and what you need from a vCISO. You’ll meet the security leader who would serve as your vCISO.
- Onboarding & baseline (first 30 days). We review your environment, documentation, risks, and obligations and deliver a baseline assessment and a 12-month roadmap.
- Monthly cadence. Regular leadership meetings, roadmap execution, policy and risk upkeep, and on-call guidance between meetings.
- Quarterly review. Progress against the roadmap, updated risk picture, and reprioritization with your leadership team.

Why USCIBER for vCISO Services
- CISO-level, not “CISO-in-name.” Your vCISO is senior security leadership with CISSP, CISM, and CISA credentials — not a junior analyst rotating through accounts.
- Governance and hands-on depth. CISM and CISA for governance and audit; GCIH, GCIA, and C|EH for incident response and how attacks actually work.
- Federal-grade control experience. Our leadership has applied NIST SP 800-53 in federal (DHS) environments — useful for any organization facing NIST-based requirements, including CMMC.
- Compliance built in. CMMC, NIST SP 800-171, and ISO 27001 support are part of the same engagement — no handoffs between firms.
- Sized for small organizations. Clear monthly pricing and priorities that fit a small team’s capacity.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a vCISO do?
A vCISO sets and runs your security program on a part-time basis: strategy and roadmap, risk management, compliance, policies, incident readiness, vendor and customer security requests, and reporting to leadership.
How much does a vCISO cost?
USCIBER scopes each vCISO engagement after a short call. Price depends on organization size, number of frameworks, meeting cadence, and how hands-on the support needs to be. A full-time CISO typically costs many times more once salary, benefits, and recruiting are included.
What’s the difference between a vCISO and a fractional CISO?
In practice, very little. Both describe a senior security executive who serves your organization part-time. “Fractional” often implies a fixed share of the person’s time; “virtual” emphasizes remote delivery. USCIBER’s service covers both.
Is a vCISO enough for CMMC or ISO 27001?
A vCISO can lead and own the compliance effort — scoping, policies, SSPs, POA&Ms, evidence, and audit preparation. Technical remediation is typically carried out by your IT team or MSP, with your vCISO directing priorities. Certification itself is issued by an independent assessor or certification body.
Will we work with the same person every month?
Yes. Continuity is the point of a vCISO. You’ll meet the security leader who will serve as your vCISO during the initial consultation.
Do you replace our IT provider or MSP?
No. We work alongside them. Your MSP runs the technology; your vCISO sets security direction, verifies controls, and owns compliance.
Is there a long-term contract?
The minimum term is three months, which covers onboarding and the first roadmap cycle. After that, the engagement continues month to month.
